Older versions of WordPress under attack

Posted on Tuesday, 22 September, 2009 By yours truly | TOOLS: Talk or Share

To quote Lorelle: Update your WordPress blog before you continue reading this post. That’s how critical this issue is.

“Otto42 of OttoDestruct, a key WordPress developer and supporter, reports that there is an “attack” on older versions of WordPress right now. The number of sites hit by this is growing every hour. Protect your WordPress blog now: UPDATE NOW!!!”

I sort of have a habit of looking up subscribers to my blog. Thankfully there are not that many of them, so it’s pretty easy. When there’s a new one, I just google it. Two new ones were “OBSCURED EMAIL ADDRESS” and “OBSCURED EMAIL ADDRESS.” Googling these resulted in a slew of warnings on a hack exploit that exists in WordPress installs older than 2.8.4. which can allow nasty things like permalinks being changed to direct people elsewhere, as ArabCrunch points out.

three triscuits and some spinach

Posted on Sunday, 10 May, 2009 By yours truly | TOOLS: Talk or Share

Three triscuits and some spinach is a group-themed blog I’m trying out at wordpress.com. If you’re of the activist/open source/tech mind, I’m looking for you to become a blogger here. I’m particularly interested in people looking at ways to use or create online tools in unique ways in the service of social justice type work, or at least entertaining ways.

A snarky tone of voice is also welcome, and other commentary about science, politics, religion, current events, etc, are not outside the scope of the site’s content. Anyway, let me know by dropping me a line via the contact page, on this site or through the comment area here or at Three triscuits and some spinach. Include links to your other writings online.

The site is new and is still going under some work, but I’d like to turn it into a readable, visit-worthy blog for lefty tech types working for The Cause.

The name, by and by, pulls from a throw-away line from Rachel Corrie’s journals that has always reminded me about the common plight of those who learn a lot of otherwise marketable skills, but use them for the good fight:

rachel.jpg“…. I’m steadfastly pursuing a track that guarantees I’ll never get paid more than three Triscuits and some spinach”
— Rachel Corrie

It sort of reminds me of another side, from the film Casablanca, when Captain Renault reminds Rick, “The winning side would have paid you much better.”

So, in summery, if you’re the person who likes this sort of thing, then this may be the sort of thing you like. Drop me a line here or here.

WordPress theme mod: The Psych Student

Posted on Saturday, 7 March, 2009 By yours truly | TOOLS: Talk or Share

the psych student

The Psych Student is a widgetized theme good for WordPress up through 2.7. It’s a modified version of the theme called Ambiru, originally designed by Phu, modified by Adam and then slightly altered again by me for use when my psychology course starts in the fall.

WordPress 2.7: If code is poetry, then this could be the Illiad

Posted on Friday, 12 December, 2008 By yours truly | TOOLS: Talk or Share

The new WordPress release is looking sweet. Will be upgrading soon and trying it out with my ever-growing annual Christmas post, which has been in draft for far too long. Working full time and being a parent has cost blogging hours for sure. In the meantime, see what the best darned open source project is delivering for Crimbo:

I was well pleased with the 2.6 releases of WordPress and had been operating an far fewer thir-pary plugins to make this one do what I wanted. Looking at 2.7, it looks like I’ll be able to run even fewer. Just from the looks of it, my top 5 reasons for upgrading are:

  • 1) Blogging from the dashboard – a limited form of this is in my current dash, but this one is fully capable.
  • 2) Mass editing from the dashboard. Less clicking around and easier organising
  • 3) Browse design themes and plugins from the interface. the less I have to log in and out, the better.
  • 4) Plugins organised at last? The problem with previous versions is that people could program their plugins to be managed in any section of WordPress that they wanted and you had to click all over the place to find out where you were meant to manage them. I’ve not really confirmed it yet, but it looks like the interface has addressed this problem and is keeping them all in one place.
  • 5) It looks really pretty.

The drew3ooo Modicus Remix theme for WordPress

Posted on Wednesday, 5 November, 2008 By yours truly | TOOLS: Talk or Share

Get under the hood and see how this blog works.

In honor of the Obama election and Guy Fawkes Day, I’m releasing the theme and associated plugins that make my website function. Download it here.

Download d3.zip from my drop.io drop box.

The design for this blog is an alteration of an alteration. The Modicus Remix theme for WordPress is proving to be quite popular for an unsupported piece of open source brik-a-brak. Modicus Remix by Art Culture is a redesign of the theme Modicus by Upstart Blogger. I use a stripped down version of Modicus-Remix here, sexed up with a number of plugins, and slightly recoded to work better with WordPress 2.5 – 2.6.

I’m now averaging about one question a week regarding the sidebar, which it seems a lot of people aren’t getting to work in their copies of Modicus-Remix. Mine didn’t work out of the box and I literally just hacked it until it did. No, I didn’t document this process and don’t quite remember everything I changed. So goes the fun process of home blog creation. The theme in its present incarnation requires a couple of plugins for it to work. Disable those plugins and your sidebar goes wonky.

One of the great side effects of having a WordPress blog, or, well any decent Web Standards complient cms, is always having a clipboard handy to work on code no matter where you are or what computer you’re on. I have tons of draft posts in my WordPress blog just dedicated to working on snippets of code and testing out how they work before porting them into my actual site projects. Here’s one of them.
