Simon Larbalestier’s photography featured on a few Pixies albums in the late 80s, early 90s. His photos carry a sort of southof-the border look that lended the alterna surf punk band’s the right imagery to match its sound. Surfa Rosa was my intro to this band which influenced a lot of my music taste since.
Not to mention, being a fan of the music also helped me get away with having this poster on the wall of my room. His work is now for sale here.
His bio at the site is here. Also here is some of his later work in Cambodia and elsewhere, and a lot of talk about buddhism, which sort of reminded me of my favorite photo how-to book, the Tao of Photography. His new stuff still has a lot of the same look and feel of the former, and I think I’ll add them to my list of 99 reasons the Pixies should get back together for more than a one-off track.

Drew3000 is on vacation for the next few days. In the mean time, here’s Raquel Welch crucified on a cross:

Hundreds of photographers gathered at New Scotland Yard on Monday to snap shots of police in protest of a new law that can criminalize the simple act of taking a snap of police officers or military personnel in public. See the British Journal of Photography for the story.
Meanwhile, 1854 (the blog of the British Journal of Photography), has posted a list of links to different flickr galleries of the protest, many of which may now be violating UK anti-terrorism laws.
While BJP posted some of its photos of today’s event against the Counter-Terrorism Act 2008, there are a lot more photos now available on sites such as Flickr. Here are the links to a view sets worth a look.
The action was called by the National Union of Journalists and the British Journal of Photography.

theCity Exposed is my friend Mike Kepka’s photo column that appears on the San Francisco Chronicle’s website. The current theme is noir. Check out these images that remind me why SF is the best thing California has to offer the world and be sure to click the sound files as well.
Sadly amid these trying economic times, documentary photojournalism isn’t found at too many newspapers, often poised for sensational shots but showing little interest in showing the true nature of things. Too bad. Years ago, photographers like Weegee showed not only the crime and grit of places like Hell’s Kitchen, but also the lives of people as they strived to make ends meet.

I signed up yesterday at the Classic Camera Repair forum to see, originally, about fixing the jammed lens cover to my beloved Lomo LC-A so as to head over to local Nunhead Cemetery to take some gothicy snaps. (for those of you who haven’t heard of these cameras, it’s an intrnal cover that works with a lever). Once that was fixed, however, I discovered I needed to fix the film winder which somehow jammed in the process. This forum had answrs to both. Still there are some amazing home remedies for Lomo cameras out there on the InterWeb. These ones I liked best:
Repairing a stuck shutter: Drop camera (backside down) onto a carpeted surface from a height of roughly three feet. I assume one would repeat until problem is either resolved or exacerbated. (1 + various others)
End part of a disclaimer note before repair advice: “I’m not sure if what I did actually fixed the problem or not. All I know is that it didn’t work, and then it did. I’d like to think that I had something to do with that.” (2)
Broken exposure counter: “If one is stuck then the counter wont work properly. Probably the advancing pawl, otherwise it would probably jam the winder. Again, this is all from memory. Here’s an unrelated page that illustrates the principle: automata.co.uk/ratchets.htm.” (3)
From the official Lomo LC-A manual’s repair section: “Never disassemble the camera.” (4)
Disassembling the LC-A: “At the left front side there is a covered screw just below the second ‘O’ of the word LOMO. You have to peel back the plastic deco to reach it.” (5)
Sticky shutter: “Open the back of the camera and give it a good hot blast for a few minutes with a hairdryer.” (6)
Finally, here’s a sad Lomo obit.
I shutter at the thought of it.

As it turns out, iPhoto makes books. Put together some of the photos that will be in a show here in downtown Olympia in early 2006.
