New Design for a New Year

Posted on Sunday, 6 December, 2009 By yours truly | TOOLS: Talk or Share

out of order

The new D3 is roughly based on four Wordpress themes

Time for a new look.Maybe it’s because I use reading glasses these days, but gone is the fine-print sized san serif typography that used to make up the bulk of the blog’s content. I took drew3ooo offline for most of December for a redesign. Consider this post to be the liner notes.

The vivacious layout, sparse use of color and elegant typography that make up this site’s sexy, sexy design are based on the stylish themes hanami and olulipo by A. Mignolo.

Wordpress theme mod: The Psych Student

Posted on Saturday, 7 March, 2009 By yours truly | TOOLS: Talk or Share

the psych student

The Psych Student is a widgetized theme good for Wordpress up through 2.7. It’s a modified version of the theme called Ambiru, originally designed by Phu, modified by Adam and then slightly altered again by me for use when my psychology course starts in the fall.

The drew3ooo Modicus Remix theme for Wordpress

Posted on Wednesday, 5 November, 2008 By yours truly | TOOLS: Talk or Share

Get under the hood and see how this blog works.

In honor of the Obama election and Guy Fawkes Day, I’m releasing the theme and associated plugins that make my website function. Download it here.

Download d3.zip from my drop.io drop box.

The design for this blog is an alteration of an alteration. The Modicus Remix theme for Wordpress is proving to be quite popular for an unsupported piece of open source brik-a-brak. Modicus Remix by Art Culture is a redesign of the theme Modicus by Upstart Blogger. I use a stripped down version of Modicus-Remix here, sexed up with a number of plugins, and slightly recoded to work better with Wordpress 2.5 – 2.6.

I’m now averaging about one question a week regarding the sidebar, which it seems a lot of people aren’t getting to work in their copies of Modicus-Remix. Mine didn’t work out of the box and I literally just hacked it until it did. No, I didn’t document this process and don’t quite remember everything I changed. So goes the fun process of home blog creation. The theme in its present incarnation requires a couple of plugins for it to work. Disable those plugins and your sidebar goes wonky.

Do media consolidation maps help, and should I care?

As a graphics person, an information architect and erstwhile designer, graphical depictions of data always fascinates me. The impending FCC vote on media ownership rules has been big news for media types and has led to a flourish of linking to those same media-ownership graphic representations at Media Channel, The Nation, Columbia Journalism Review, etc. that stories linked to when this was going on in 2003. But as I look at these maps, and see Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp media holding’s in one sphere and AT&T in another one, I wonder if I would really care whether one really bought out the other. I mean, if both offer crap that I now readily dismiss, should I really give a fig if it’s this company or that company running E! or Fox News? Either way, it will still suck.

In which we discuss WordPress themes, plugins and the merits of selectivity

[minislides]Less still means more. I’ve been testing out WordPress themes on this website over the last few days to find something to replace the old standby, Mandigo. In the end, I have based the current look of the site on an elegant piece of theme-making called “Modicus Remix” by Art Culture. In a lot of ways, both themes appeal to me but are in start contrast to one another. In arriving at Modicus Remix I sampled a number of themes, rethought the purpose of this site and decided that what I wanted to do with it. Here, in a pithy design critique, we look at the themes Mandigo and Modicus Remix and a few other themes that break the typical “blog” mold and range between the simple and the overly wrought.

Website undergoing elective cosmetic surgery

Posted on Wednesday, 10 October, 2007 By yours truly | TOOLS: Talk or Share

This site will be looking even less attractive than usual for the next little bit as I check out a number of new templates in search of something that suits me a little better than the current previous choice.
