One week old, our newest family edition has expressed mixed, though seemingly apropos feelings about some of the great poets of the 20th century. The compilation of poets reading their own work comes from the CD that came in last weekend’s Guardian1.
Siegfried Sassoon: “The Dug out” and “Everyone Sang.”
Reaction: A fan of the satirical anti-war poet. Hands flail about.
WH Auden: “Shield of Achilles” and “As I Walked out One Evening”
Reaction: Pushes head up into hat until eyes covered.
TS Eliot: “The Journey of the Magi” and “A Game of Chess”
Reaction: Smiles. TS Eliot’s voice is a hit.
Ted Hughes: “Pike” and “February 17th”
Reaction: Slight look of discomfort. Possibly due to Ted’s harsh voice or a poo coming on.
Philip Larkin: “The Whitsun Wedding” and “The Trees”
Reaction: Nods off
Sylvia Plath: “Parliament Hill Fields” and “The Applicant”
Reacton: Awake again. Wistful stares at chicken pattern in stroller.
Seamus Heaney: “Death of a naturalist,” “The Railway Children” and “Clearances 3″
Reaction: Hand forms to fist. Fist in mouth.
