Hip Hop Caucus: What a progressive political action committee looks like

Posted on Monday, 21 January, 2008 By yours truly | TOOLS: Talk or Share

I love the Hip Hop Caucus. It talks about all those things you wish a political party in the U.S. would bring up, and by political party, I mean the Democrats. It does so in an engaging, creative, attractive and empowering way (As opposed to cliché, stale, outdated, finger-wagging and ultimately off-putting) that you’d like to think wouldn’t be lost on the PR types of some forward thinking political party, and now by “political party” I mean the Green Party. Lastly, they include religious types without being moralizing, end-timey fundamentalist dickwads, and by dickwads I of course mean most Republicans. Not all of Republicans, of course, just the radicalized ones. There is room in our world moderates. I just haven’t found a moderate Republican. I’m really just looking for one who’s a realistic negotiating partner. Honest.

Greetings from the Hip Hop Caucus,

We believe that we can create the same scope of change today that the civil rights movement generated forty years ago. It all starts with organizing, which is why we created the Hip Hop Caucus. The Hip Hop Caucus is a space for our generation to come together as people of all races and creeds to discuss, debate, and most importantly act on a new vision of a society and a government that works for everyone

Appeal letter from Break the Siege movement organizers in Gaza

Posted on Monday, 21 January, 2008 By yours truly | TOOLS: Talk or Share

The following email was sent from the Break the Siege movement organizers in Gaza. Right now Gaza faces an incredible onslaught of human rights abuses. Hospitals, food storage facilities, homes and schools are to be left without power. The border is sealed to everyone including those needing out for emergency medical care and those trying to deliver much needed supplies.

Please forward it to all friends and tell them to do so…… Death and Darkness in Gaza, People are dying, Help us!

A humanitarian crisis is underway as the Gaza Strip’s only power plant began to shut down on Sunday, and the tiny coastal territory entered its third full day without shipments of vital food and fuel supplies due to Israel’s punitive sanctions.

Travels with Birthright Unplugged

Posted on Monday, 21 January, 2008 By yours truly | TOOLS: Talk or Share

My friend John Harvey is currently visiting Palestine. John has been a longtime Olympia+Rafah Sister City Project pal and this is his first trip to the Israeli and occupied Palestinian territories. Since I’m way too busy shopping for baby prams and researching eco -friendly nappies and have no freaking time to update my own blog these days, I will continue my trend in donating posts to people with something to say. In this photo by John, Palestinian kids greet the Jewish organization Birthright Unplugged during one of their stops on a tour of Palestine.  — andy

Dear family and friends,

I finished my tour with the Jewish American group “BirthRight Unplugged.” Very excellent tour and naturally we were well taken care of by the Palestinians. We felt completely at ease walking the streets of the refugee camps, etc, and we met so many lovely people. I will post photos as soon as possible, but it is hard to predict internet service. An outline of my itinerary is at the very bottom.

The Road to Damascus: Mideast Observations by Gene Robbins

Posted on Sunday, 13 January, 2008 By yours truly | TOOLS: Talk or Share

HPIM0096.JPGToday I donate the following post to members of Rachel Corrie’s family who recently visited various parts of the middle east. Bonnie Brodersen and Gene Robbins, aunt and uncle to Rachel Corrie, traveled the Middle East in late 2007 with their daughter Emily Robbins, visiting Syria, the occupied Palestinian territories, Israel and Lebanon. These are Gene’s observations.

By Gene Robbins

Two things make this trip different from our two-week stay in Syria two years ago – Emmy’s superb fluency in Arabic and getting out of Damascus for more than just day trips.

We spent 10/19 eating at courtyard restaurants in the Old City of Damascus with Syrian friends (families) of Emily. These courtyards are huge open-air areas originally designed so that women could be outdoors and yet not have to go out in public.
