CNN may as well as headlined its poll results on water boarding as “Just over half of Americans know what torture is but 40 percent think it’s ok.”

Wait, isn’t 40 percent also the percentage of votes a member of he Bush family needs to be declared president? I think that recently got passed into law or something.

Among those survey results is nestled George Bush’s nominee for US attorney general, Michael Mukasey, who just isn’t quite sure whether simulated drowning a person to near death constitutes torture. Why Americans are at all worth asking this question is puzzling. Why not ask, say, Cambodians? Or, maybe Henri Alleg. Or perhaps Mike and a significant number of these flag humping patriots just need to see what it’s like to have themselves gagged, tied, hung upside down and doused with water until they think they’re about to die before CNN ask them what they think about the experience.

To that group add Democratic Sens. Dianne Feinstein and Charles Schumer who were more afraid of the obscure specter of a recess appointment than of confirming an attorney general who doesn’t possess a working definition of torture.

Feinstein: “I believe that Judge Mukasey is the best nominee we are going to get from this administration and that voting him down would only perpetuate acting and recess appointments, allowing the White House to avoid the transparency that confirmation hearings provide and to diminish effective oversight by Congress.” link

Um, dear idiot: This White House couldn’t become more transparent unless it started beheadings on the White House lawn. You’ve only helped legitimize its tendency toward installing thugs in high places. Way to go.
