For the duration of the following post, I turn this blog over to my good friend and inspiration, Jen Marlowe.

Take it away, Jen:

Dear friends,

I’m very excited to update you on “Rebuilding Hope”, my current documentary film project.

This past summer, journalist David Morse and I accompanied three “Lost Boys” (Gabriel Bol Deng, Koor Garang and Garang Mayuol) back to their villages in South Sudan. They were on a two-part journey; to discover whether their families survived the civil war that forced them to flee as young boys twenty years ago, and to try to help their communities, through health and education. The film not only documents the journey of discovery for these three young men; it also sheds light on the thoughts and analyses of the people of South Sudan nearly three years after the signing of the fragile Comprehensive Peace Agreement, exploring the connections between the conflict in South Sudan and in other parts of Sudan, including Darfur.

PROGRESS ON PROJECT:
A seven-minute-excerpt of the film will be aired October 26 on PBS’s program “Foreign Exchange with Fareed Zakaria”. For info about viewing times in your city, please visit www.foreignexchange.tv.
The segment can also be viewed online at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mcsmsEy02kc

The Nation magazine published online (together with the film excerpt) an article I wrote about the trip, which can be found at www.thenation.com/doc/20071105/marlowe

Articles by David Morse, a photo slide show, a blog we kept on the trip and more can be found both on the film’s website at www.rebuildinghopesudan.org and on our project page for the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting at http://www.pulitzercenter.org/showproject.cfm?id=33

OCT 30th EVENT IN WASHINGTON DC:
I will be showing the film excpert at an event on Tuesday, October 30th in Washington, DC, as well as speaking on a panel along with Dave Eggers (”What is the What”) and Karim Chrobog (”War Child”). A flyer for the event with specifics is attached. I hope to see some of you there—and please feel free to spread the word to friends and colleagues in the DC area.

HOW YOU CAN HELP:
Filming is only the starting stage of a documentary film; both in terms of the funds needed and the remaining work to be done.

Your help is needed in order for “Rebuilding Hope” to be completed! All proceeds from the film will go to support health and education in South Sudan. The sooner the money is raised, the sooner the film can be used to raise awareness and long-term financial support for these critical needs.

Fundraisers can be a large party, a small dinner party, a car wash—or anything in between! If you would like to organize a fundraiser and need ideas or materials, such as an excerpt of the film to show, please contact us at rebuildinghope@gmail.com.

BECOME A STUDENT OR COMMUNITY PRODUCER
We are inviting student and community groups to become Student and Community Producers to work from the ground up on “Rebuilding Hope”. Please contact us at rebuildinghope@gmail.com if you are interested in more information about becoming a Student or Community Producer!

For more information about any aspect of the project, please feel free to visit our newly constructed website at www.rebuildinghopesudan.org, or contact me at rebuildinghope@gmail.com.

I look forward to continuing to update you about “Rebuilding Hope” and to working together to raising awareness about and bringing health and education to people in South Sudan!

Sincerely,
Jen Marlowe
