After having bypassed democracy a couple of times at home and working to keep it from infiltrating Afghanistan and Iraq, Team Bush, otherwise known as “Congress,” are looking to keep it from happening in Palestine as well.

According to the Jerusalem Post, “The Palestinian Authority and Hamas on Saturday rejected threats by the US House of Representatives to cut off financial aid to the Palestinians if Hamas is permitted to participate in next month’s parliamentary elections.”

This in from Gush Shalom:
“Neither the government of Israel nor the US Congress can censor the Palestinian political system and dictate who shall not participate in the Palestinian elections. Democracy means that the Palestinian public, like all others, could freely elect its representatives and leaders” says Gush Shalom, the Israeli Peace Bloc. “For better or worse, Hamas is one of the two main political parties on the Palestinian scene. Palestinian elections without the Hamas would be a meaningless farce, like US elections from which the Republican or the Democratic Party was excluded. The State of Israel should be willing to negotiate with whoever wins the elections and becomes the elected representative of the Palestinian people. If the government of Israel wants to influence the outcome of the elections, the only legitiamte way to do it is to take concrete and visible steps showing its intention to put an end to the occupation.”

In October, it was released by the Guardian newspaper that George Bush told PA officials that god had told him to go to Palestine. Apparently god’s agenda in the holy land involved issueing threats in order to throw an election.
